During "normal days" when an individual eats (in particular carbohydrate), and there is high level of glucose in the blood, the pancreas releases insulin which assists the liver and muscle cells in taking up excess sugar which are converted to glycogen for storage.

During exercise or while fasting, the body releases glucose from this glycogen storage for normal body activities through a process known as glycogenolysis.
