If the patient has labored breathing and also has a fruity odor to his breath, and also has Type 1 diabetes this is a serious condition. The patient is most likely ketoacidosis. This can come on suddenly without warning and can be a life threatening condition. The body's cells are unable to get glucose during ketoacidosis.
