Contusion. Contusions are localized areas of “bruising” of the brain tissue. They consist of areas of swollen brain and blood that has leaked out of small arteries, veins, or capillaries. Contusions will often occur under the impact point on the skull (coup).

Contusion causes bleeding and swelling inside of the brain around the area where the head was struck. Contusions may occur along with a fracture or other blood clots.
