Short In traditional Hmong (Southeast Asian) practices, there is a deep belief that spirits cause illness and that spiritual healing can remove their harmful influence. Healers in the community specialize in treating various spiritual illnesses, using a variety of herbs and roots in a tea form. The healer may also tie a spirit string around the wrist of the ill person to ward off harmful spirits, or at times, perform animal sacrifices to appease the spirits. Renal disease (kidney disease) rates are significantly high in the Hmong population of Los Angeles and Hmong patients who require dialysis treatment often start a treatment program but drop out within a few weeks in order to start traditional Hmong healing practices. In most cases, patients will die from kidney failure without proper dialysis or transplantation. As a public health expert, what would you recommend to address the rates of renal disease and navigate the cultural context of traditional vs. western medicine in the Hmong community? (Hint: use the social impact assessment to support your response)
