Being unable to read or write creates life long difficulties. When this occurs in the West there is usually some underlying explanation. In developing countries some communities are illiterate, so there is a bond and an understanding of how to function in society. The sense of alienation is there, but because so many others cannot read, it seems less so.

I have only met 2 people in the West in my fairly long life who are illiterate. They can only work menial jobs, and the one I knew was very intelligent and sometimes became angry at the barriers thrown up against her. She was great with mentally challenged children, but Germany had new laws around qualifications for working with children. If you can’t read, you can’t qualify and therefore can’t work with children. It was low pay but satisfying, and now ended.
