Healthy relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners stress management
regular exercise
good sleep habits
preventive medical and dental care
community health and environmental safety
Of course, knowing how to stay healthy is only helpful when people put that knowledge into action. One challenge is that no single plan works well for all people. Everyone needs to exercise, eat a nutritious diet, and get enough sleep. But the details of what that looks like will be different for every individual. A 60-year-old runner, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, and a 13-year-old boy have different diet and exercise needs. They also have different medical needs. For example, a pregnant woman needs more checkups than a healthy teenager.

Just as importantly, different individuals also have different social and emotional needs. They face different stressors and rely on different stress-management techniques. All individuals are also affected differently by their community and environment. They are likely to be exposed to different types of media and get different messages from the media they consume.

In this project, you will start to think about how to put health information to use in your own life. Explore ways that people are influenced by culture and the media, analyze health risks in your personal life and community, and develop a health plan and a safety plan that fit your lifestyle.
Project Overview
In this project, you will create a slide show using a presentation program. Your presentation will include three different parts, which will be made up of at least two slides each. Also, the presentation should start with a title slide and end with a Works Cited slide that lists your sources. In total, your presentation will have a minimum of eight slides. Below is a breakdown of the two parts your presentation must contain.

In Part 1: Culture and Media, you will explore the influence of both culture and media on attitudes about relationships or appearance.
In Part 2: Personal and Community Health, you will choose a health concern that affects you personally and affects your community.
This project will span multiple units. You will begin in Lesson 1 and will submit the project in Lesson 10. If you have any questions along the way, do not hesitate to ask your teacher.
Project Details
Part 1: Culture and Media
In this part of your project, you will explore the influence of culture and media on attitudes about relationships and appearance. You should have at least two slides of information for this section—one about culture and one about media.

appearance
romantic relationships
friendships
male and female attractiveness
Part 2: Personal and Community Health
For this part of your project, you will do research and choose a topic that presents health risks both to you and to your community. On one slide, you will analyze your own personal health risks in regard to that topic. On a second slide, you will analyze your community’s health risks in regard to that same topic.

Begin by choosing a topic that affects your personal health and your community’s health. Possible topics include

sun exposure
water quality
air quality
exercise habits
sleep habits
preventive medical and dental care
stress
crime rates
For the topic you choose, your presentation should include

a description of what good health involves in regard to that topic (both personally and for the community)
a description of three health risks associated with this topic (both personally and for the community)
a list of personal or environmental factors that make change in this area of health difficult (both personally and for the community)
For example, if you chose exercise as a topic, your presentation might include information such as

recommended physical activity guidelines for people your age
short-term and long-term costs of failing to get enough exercise
personal factors and community factors that make changing exercise habits hard, such as limited time to exercise, lack of exercise facilities in the community, and so on.
Step 1: Choose the Specific Topic for Each Part of Your Project
Identify areas of interest to you within each of the broad project topics.
Once you narrow down your topic, do some research to identify the main issues related to that topic. You can refer to the specific information listed in the “Project Details” section.
Write down the sources you have used to gather this information.
Step 2: Planning and Development
Develop a title slide with a relevant graphic.
Identify the information you want to convey in each part of your project.
Develop an outline to help you plan what you want to include on each slide.
Choose the detailed, relevant facts you want to include on your slides.
Start drafting and editing your presentation
Create your Works Cited slide
