 I cannot be 100% sure what causes it but I do know that fungus likes to grow in warm, wet areas. To heal and reduce pain and swelling try soaking it in warm water 3 to 4 times a day if you happen to have acute paronychia. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics if your paronychia was caused by bacteria. He or she may prescribe anti-fungal medicines if your infection was caused by a fungus.
