If more people developed an understanding that mental illness is a disease, not a choice, what might change for the mentally ill? the social isolation they experience would increase and their self-esteem would diminish. freed from the social pressure to go to treatment, they would find that their illness improves. without the stigma of mental illness, they would all pursue better job opportunities. if the stigma associated with mental illness was reduced, their self-esteem would improve.
