Why were senators able to amass more power and influence than congressmen during the gilded age?

Senators were able to amass more power and influence than congressmen during the gilded age because they awarded contracts and determined the companies that  would get them as well as the content of the contracts themselves in terms of how lavishly these companies would be rewarded. In return, they received hefty bribes.
