Why is most of the land surrounding missippi river prone to flooding?

Most of the land that surrounds the Mississippi River is prone to flooding because it is lowland. The Mississippi River has big fluctuations in its water levels, and when there's melting of snow in the mountains its tributaries bring much more water to it and thus rise its levels. Also when there's more rain its water level goes up, both by the water it receives directly and by the water coming from its tributaries. Since most of the land around the Mississippi River is a lowland, even a minor increase in its water levels causes floods, and that is something that is happening every year.
