The US Constitution defines citizenship in the Fourteenth Amendment. It is specifically  in the first clause of Section 1 that the Constitution states that: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." A person is a citizen if he was born within the Unites States, but they can also become a citizen by naturalization.

The Fourteenth Amendment was adopted by the Constitution of the United States on July 9, 1968, and it is considered as one of the reconstruction amendments. This amendment addressed citizenship rights as well as provided equal protection of the laws which were proposed in response to the issues that were related to former slaves.  

Several clauses are included in the first section of this Amendment. These clauses are the Citizenship Clause, Equal Protection Clause as well as Immunity clause. Broad definition with regards to citizenship is provided in citizen clause whereas the Equal protection clause requires every state of United States to provide equal protection to all the people under the law and that includes all non-citizens also who live within the jurisdiction of that particular state. This amendment also protects various civil rights from being denied to abrogated by any State of the United States.
