classical conditioning was developed by ivan pavlov after his experiments with dogs. it works through stimulus and response.

two types of stimulus are used in combination: a conditioned stimulus (cs) which is neutral as, for example, a sound ,and an unconditioned stimulus (us) which is potent in a biological way, as for example food or its smell. us causes a reflex response (salivation). by repeating cs and us together, learning happens and the reflex response will be observed after cs too.
