In his 28 April, 1870 letter to U.S senator Hon. Charles Sumner, Pixley states his reasons against Chinese immigration. He is simply afraid that the Chinese would outnumber the Americans in California. He argues that the Chinese come with no intention of staying, no intention of learning the American way of life. They keep their customs and this might eventually undermine the American culture and the citizens rights. For example, they are willing to live in crowded places and be paid less for their work because they can subsist with tea and rice, when American worker needs bread and meat, making salaries to drop.
