The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 or the Hart cellar Act was a federal law implemented by the United States 89th Congress and was put into effect by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It aimed at abolishing the National Origin Formulae that was prevalent in the United States since the 1920s. The act also abolished the discrimination that existed against the Europeans, Asians and Northwestern Europeans.

The act created the preference system that gave the relatives of United States citizens legal and permanent citizenship.
