Hamilton's and Jefferson's ideas on liberty and authority were different but at the same time complementary. While Hamilton believed in strong central government with more powers, Jefferson believed in the power of people ; states and local self government. Hamilton argued that strengthening the federal  government would ensure freedom of every citizen by uniting the  people to think and speak with a single voice. Though he opposed bill of rights, he used to say every government should be rejected if it sacrifices the liberty of people. On the other hand Jefferson believed  that every increase in the authority of the government come at the cost of liberty. He believed in an eternal struggle between the authority of government and liberty of people - an unequal struggle in which all the benefit lie on the side of power.

Today America is having the republican spirit as proposed by Jefferson and cementing bond of people as proposed by Hamilton and thus complementary to each other.
