As a matter of fact, the main goal of buddhism is to learn how to severe ties with everything in this material world, including family and friend relationships and any kinds of cravings for food, drinks, clothes, etc. As a person learns to leave all attachments to material things, the reincarnation cycle is broken for good a new state of conscience and existence is achieved: nirvana.
