Why did the british think that cutting off the new england colonies from the middle colonies would thm defeat the patriots

Imagine this.. if you were in the middle of 2 fights, you would have weapons coming at you from both directions. If you blocked off one of the armies, it would be easier for you to defend yourself. Also, they could be more aware of an attack is they only have 1 side to worry about. :)
