Since the beginning of the 20th century, Japan was one of the main powers of the planet. It based its economic prosperity on a modern industry and on exports, especially those made to China and the United States. Its population grew dramatically and its army was among the most powerful in the world, as was seen in the war with Russia in 1905. At the same time, it initiated an expansionist policy that materialized in the annexation of Korea in 1905 and in the constant interference in Chinese politics.

The Great Depression hit with force the Japanese economy, since their traditional clients imposed customs barriers to their products. For the Japanese leaders it became vital to build an empire of their own from which to control access to raw materials and secure an extensive market for their goods. They put their eyes in the north of China, more specifically in the region of Manchuria.

In 1931, there was an incident involving the Japanese army that guarded the South Manchurian railway, owned by Japan. Japan accused the Chinese of blowing part of the section of said railroad. Many thought that in reality those responsible for the sabotage had been members of the Japanese army itself, and that the act was a mere excuse to annex the Chinese territory.  

In 1932 Japan, claiming the defense of its interests, and once expelled the Chinese troops, created the Republic of Manchukuo.
