The West African Empires (Ghana, Mali, Songhai) traded gold with the Arab and Berber merchants who brought salt from the Sahara region and manufactured goods from the northern Mediterranean ports. Those merchants and missionaries who came to Ghana, brought with them their religion, Islam. As a result, rulers in Ghana adopted Islam. Besides, Ghana kings decided to hire Muslim advisors to help them rule because they believed that Muslims were very intelligent  people.
