Before the Seven Years War, the economy of Saint Domingue grew enormously. One of its great economic activities was sugar, which later they exported to the Old World. After the war, it use to export 72 million pounds of raw sugar and 51 million pounds of refined sugar. Saint Domingue was known as the "Pearl of the Antilles", it was one of the richest colonies from the French Empire.

As usual at that time, the labor for plantations was provided by millions African slaves. The colony received more than 40.000 slaves per year. The majority of slaves were born in Africa, as diseases such as the yellow fever and the horrible conditions of slavery prevented the population from experiencing  growth through natural increase. Slaves remained strong against their French rulers.

Thousands of slave found freedom by escaping to the mountains, forming communities and raiding plantations. One of the most famous slaves was Mackandal. He successfully avoided capture by the French for six years. He wanted to destroy white colonization in Saint Domingue . In 1758, he was captured and burned to death.

Many free population of colour were former slaves, and most members were mulattoes, a mix of French-European and African ancestry.They were descendants of enslaved women and French colonists.
