Who were the falasha? how did they preserve their culture?

Jews of Ethiopian origin are known as Falashas. The name falasha means 'exiles' or 'those without land', in the Amharic language. The Falashas refer to themselves using the name of Beta Esrael (House of Israel). The religion of the falashas is a modified variant of mosaic Judaism. Their religious customs can be shared by other Jewish communities as well as differ, for example: one of the non-biblical holidays for them is that of the commemoration of Abraham. The regulations of the Sabbath are very severe. They maintain the biblical laws concerning meals, but ignore the post-biblical regulations imposed by the rabbis, in which the joint consumption of meat and dairy products is not allowed.  Under the government of Hailé Selassié I, some Falashas came to hold important positions within the educational system and the Ethiopian government, but after the emperor's expulsion in 1974, they were the victims of heavy persecution. For this reason, most of them emigrated to Israel in the middle of the 20th century, where they were recognized as descendants of the lost tribes of Israel. So then, Israel recognized them as authentic Jews after they passed through a small conversion.
