The "coup d'état" overthrew the Directory in France, allowing Napoleon Bonaparte to become First Consul of France.

The Directory was destroyed by force (strengthening Napoleon) and people who had plotted to crush the government -Napoleon among them- formed two commissions which were intimidated to declare a provisional government.

These commissions drew a Constitution -the first one after the revolution- that did not include a Declaration of Rights.

The lack of response on the streets of France showed that the French Revolution process was over. People only wanted to be governed wisely.

Jacobin officeholders resisted this new government, but their resistance was firmly crushed.

Napoleon Bonaparte appointed the Senate and the Senate interpreted the Constitution and all of these things gave Bonaparte a great and unlimited power to rule France.
