The Indian Removal or Indian Removal was a policy of the United States government in the nineteenth century that sought to move the Amerindian tribes (or "Native Americans") that lived in the east of the Mississippi River to land west of the river. During the decades that followed the War of the Independence of the United States, the rapid increase of the population of the country resulted in numerous treaties in which Native American lands were purchased. Finally, the government of the United States began to encourage the Indian tribes to sell their lands by offering them land in the west, outside the borders of the then existing states of the country, where the tribes could settle again.
