Why was the battle of okinawa a turning point?

It was the first time the U.S. had been pushed back and beaten so hard by the Japanese in WWII. It was also the largest amphibious landing in the Pacific Theater during WWII. It resulted in very large casualties, with over 100,000 Japanese deaths, and over 50,000 American deaths.

It has the potential to lead to limits on rights by giving flexibility in making laws.
