During the Ancien Régime people was clasified into three estates: 1) the First Estate (clergy). 2) the Second Estate (nobility). 3) the Third Estate (commoners/ peasants and bourgeoisie). The two first estates didn't pay any taxes and the peasants of the Third Estate had to pay 10%  of their harvest to the church (First Estate). Also the nobility (Second Estate) owned the lands where the peasants worked and received a tribute from the use of them. The two first estates represented only 3% of the french population.
