Humanism and Revival of the Classics

One of the changes that occurred in artwork during this  period was the effect of Humanism on art . During the Middle Ages art concentrated on of stereotyped, or symbolic figures mostly of religious nature but Renaissance art focussed on the individual figure; thus providing greater realism and, consequently, bringing attention to detail of the human faces and bodies. This new approach  helps to explain why artists such as Leonardo Da vinci showed interest in the human figure as is the case of his Vitruvian man.

Another difference was reflected in the exploration of virtue in the visual arts. Since the Renaissance artist was more prone to believe that man, not fate or God, controlled human destiny, paintings with different message  became regarded as a valid form of art. This was brought about by a revival of classics such as Greek philosophy and beliefs, which is clearly  seen in Sandro Botticelli´s Birth of Venus.
