Dawson had settled that land at the end of 1860 due to a land grant belonging to Lucien B. Maxwell. The land was in Colfax County, New Mexico. He built a cattle ranch and later he discovered coal deposits. That is when he discovered a coal mine and he sold the land to the Dawson Fuel Company in 1901, and then were passed to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1906.
