The native populations had a very important relationship with nature.  It was their means of survival but it also had a sacred significance for them.

Explanation:

Traditionally the natives of North America lived in balance and harmony with nature.  They valued and respected the resources it provided.  These populations depended on nature for survival.  They would hunt and gather food and eventually began to domesticate plants and animals.  

They also had a very spiritual connection with nature.  Most of their religious beliefs were tied to natural phenomena or elements like the sun, moon, and rain.  Many groups would carry out ceremonies and rituals to make sure the gods were happy.

Animals were also very important symbols for the natives, they were believed to have sacred powers that could be harnessed by individuals.  Common animals revered by many groups were eagles, bears, mountain lions, and deer.
