At the time the war broke out, there were an estimated 9.5 million Jewish people living in Europe. Europe is where most of the Jewish population lived at that time. With approximately 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust, this means approximately 60% of the European Jewish population - and nearly 40% of the total worldwide Jewish population - were wiped out.
