It was a good idea from Grant to give south generous terms of surrender.

Explanation:

American civil war was between the confederate states and the Union made up of Northern states. The confederate states refused to join the Union due to differences of opinion in several matters. The Civil war ended by the surrender of the confederate states in the south.  

When the strong union forces fought against the southern states, the confederate armies couldn’t defend them for so long. In 1865 General Robert E Lee of the confederate states surrendered to union general Ulysses S Grant.  

The terms of surrender offered by Grant were generous. The surrendered soldiers were not punished. They had to surrender their rifles and were allowed to go home and could keep their horses or mules.  

The terms were made generous to avoid any chances of rebellion again by the confederates. This move ensured peace in the union and thus is a wise decision.
