As time passed, the significance of agriculture declined in terms of contribution to GDP. Now, agriculture contributes about 15% to India’s GDP. Over 50% of the population is engaged in agriculture.

The services sector was the second largest contributor to GDP at the time of independence. It contributed about 30% to India’s GDP which increased to about 55% currently.
