There are many sub national administrative units which are governed by US government. There are fourteen territories in Caribbean sea and Pacific ocean. Five territories are inhabited and nine are small islands. Philippines,Micronesia and Marshall Islands became independent from US. Most of the incorporated territories existed from 1789 to 1959. The territories in the Northwest and Southwest became states of USA. Acquisition of all these territories was the result of US imperialism in which it displaced the native Americans from their land. It also acquired Hawaii islands and Philippines.  

The cartoon above also depict the outcome of US imperialism, it was due to its imperialism that it managed to become such a large nation and also acquire territories away from mainland.
