Why did catholics not support the french revolution?

 even though Jesus Christ was a revolutionary and his message continues being revolutionary, Catholic church became a conservative and power ridden institution. It was quite natural that Catholic church and papacy defended monarchic order.

All these changes were to fast. Reactions of papacy were usually defensive and fearful. Church usually allied with conservative politics.
