how did the age of enlightenment affect the legal standing of slavery in
the american colonies and in france.

Enlightenment was a massive European intellectual and cultural movement that defended rationalism (in politics, in state bureaucracy and institutions). Enlightenment rationalism contradicted slavery because slavery is viewed as 1) not human, 2) irrational. Rousseau, Encyclopedists or Kant (leading thinkers of that time) were of course against inhuman methods or measures in politics. What followed ? Abolishment of slavery. It was not fast but the French revolution that resulted from Enlightenment promoted "equality" and "fraternity" and "freedom". Slavery was not acceptable anymore. The last country that abolished slavery was Brazil in 1888. France and USA abolished slavery long before this year.
