Why did slavery grow faster in the lower south than in virginia?

Therefore more farms and plantations,which required a lot of field hands(obviously this was before mechanized tractors etc.) Being a house slave was a better position than being a field hand,as the individual got better clothing & the workwas less physically demanding.
