Yes, the film does improve the viewer’s understanding of the historical event's because, you can see exactly or most of what Anne went through versus reading the book your trying to picture what is happening here in the movie, you are to see how and what exactly was going on, and how much more pressure was applied on them. you also get a better feeling of how the story went, you could also see the damage to their city/country and how the war was overcoming it.
