Its building was started during the Qing dynasty (1644 to 1911) of the Chinese empire, in 1694. It remained so until Yinzhen died in 1735. His remains was laid to rest in the temple, prompting the succeeding Emperor, the Qianlong Emperor to give the temple an Imperial status, hence the yellow tiles that replaced the turquoise tiles. This made the Yonghe temple the National Center of the Lama administration, the home to so many monks of Tibetan Buddhism from Mongolia and Tibet.
