Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a writer, leader and a personality who actively took part in civil rights and women’s suffrage movement. During her public life, she was often seen alongside Susan B. Anthony who was the public spokesperson. Elizabeth Stanton participated in the abolitionist movement and also organized the first ever women’s rights convention in 1848. Apart from her contributions to the woman suffrage, Elizabeth Stanton advocated for liberal divorce laws, equal guardianship as well as property rights for married women. Her efforts did make a difference in the American society as many women did come out of unruly marriages which were discriminatory on them and their children.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was also the main author of the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments, which she subsequently presented in the first women’s rights convention, of which she was one of the organizers, in July 1848, in New York. Modeled upon the United States Declaration of Independence, asserted the equality of both men and women, with both allowed inalienable rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. It argued that women face oppression by both state and the patriarchal society, before listing the kinds of oppression faced by women, including inequality in aspects of government, marital property, divorce, education and employment. It insists that women be viewed as equal citizens, like men, and have same rights and privileges as them.
