ibn khaldun (muslim scholar/1332-1406) – speculated that there were certain patterns to the rise and fall of arab empires.

the first generation of rulers retain the tough qualities of their desert roots. the conquerors stick together and share their wealth. they are tough and feared.
the second generation becomes weak and soft from sedentary living, but they remember their desert values.
completely forgets their desert roots. they become soft from luxurious living and forget their warrior skills.

to what extent does this pattern fit the rise and fall of the umayyad and abbasid dynasties?
