In the last half of the nineteenth century, the standard of living for many American workers increased and the poor enjoyed what the rich could not afford before. During this time, what used to be a luxuries have become the necessaries of life. Many Americans left farms and small towns to work in factories and civilized cities. more and more workers hold white collar office jobs rather than unskilled blue collar factory jobs. Organised labor rooted in industries such as steel and heavy machinery had trouble adapting to the new changes.
