Why is the epic called Ramayana?

The word Ramayana is made up of two words Rama+Ayana (which means movement in English). The epic is named so because, in the entire epic Lord Rama will be in movement right from his adult age till the end. His action starts from the age of sixteen when Vishwamitra bramharshi takes Lord Rama with him to kill Rakshasas Thaataki and Subaahu who were troubling him while performing Yaaga.

Valmiki had also thought of other names for the epic like “Pulasthyavadha” and “Sitacharitha mahath” and finally decided to go with “Ramayana”. Thus sending a strong message to the upcoming generations that we as individuals needs to keep us in action always, try exploring new things and keep learning.
