How did the geography of greece lead to conflict between city-states?

The fact that Greece developed city-states had deep implications for its history and culture. City-states were created in Greece because of its geography. Greece is mostly made up of small islands, which led to small, independent populations. Due to this independence, these city-states operated independently with no ruler to control them all. Moreover, the Mediterranean is easy to navigate, which meant that these colonies were often in constant contact.

The geography and the political arrangement led to conflict between the city-states because it meant that several aristocracies and elites were developed, with no king to control them all. These aristocracies were equivalent in power and abilities, which encouraged competition and made absolute victories unlikely.

this was done so the church could remain in control of what their teachings were and to enhance their importance and power, while also being able to judge people's actions through information that was unavailable for the general public.
