The real causes of World War I included politics, secret alliances, imperialism, and nationalistic pride. However, there was one single event, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, which started a chain of events leading to war. The war started mainly because of four aspects: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism. The overall cause of World War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Nationalism was a great cause of World War one because of countries being greedy and not negotiating. Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria, nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph, and heir to the Habsburg throne. Franz Ferdinand's assassination on June 28, 1914, by Serbian militant Gavrilo Princip, is widely considered the unofficial start of World War I.
