It is one of the three pillars of the US-China relationship, the first of three joint communiqués. It´s was the first bilateral document signed by the United States with China after 1949.

On its side, China stated that Taiwan is part of China, that it was returned to the motherland, and it is a province of China, it´s an internal affair where foreign intervention is unacceptable. The People´s Republic of China is the only legitimate representative of China, the Chinese government stated in the document.
