The mission of the Department of State is to formally conduct the diplomacy of the United States around the world. It is made by career officials (most employees at home and abroad assigned to embassies and consular offices) and political appointees in each administration (the Secretary of State, his/her deputies , some ambassadors).

They meet foreign counterparts and take care of the US interests in their dealings with foreign diplomats, following the guidelines issued by the department and the administration.
