Question: Explain the impact this new technology had?

Technology made World War I different from previous wars. Modern weapons caused many casualties. In 1915 first Germany and then the Allies began using poisonous gases. Advances in technology introduced modern tanks, aircraft and submarines. Germany used zeppelins to bomb the English coast. Both sides equipped aircraft with machine guns. Pilots known as the "aces of aviation" faced each other in the skies, but these "closed air combats" had little effect on ground warfare. German submarines, called U-boot, caused tremendous damage to Allied ships. To defend against they the Allies organized convoys or groups of merchant ships protected by warships.
