Despite the evidence that the earliest homo sapiens originated in Africa, that continent's contributions to society have been largely overshadowed by the contributions that came from Asia. This may be attributed to the difficulty of access to the jungles where African culture thrived, perhaps Africa's relative self-sufficiency of natural resources which limited the need for Africans to trade with other regions. Europeans valued the products that came from the East: spices from India, silk and tea from China-- not to mention gunpowder. The Silk Road between Rome and China facilitated not only the exchange of goods from Europe-- wool, gold and silver to Asia, it also encouraged the exchange of ideas, religion, legends, and the sayings of Confucius. The civilizations of Asia had systems of writing which recorded their history and literature for the Europeans to discover, The culture of Africa was mainly passed on though spoken language, thus more difficult to transport and study in foreign lands.
