William Lloyd Garrison

I’m William Lloyd Garrison, and I think the Constitution helps support and continue the cruel and inhuman practice of slavery. Its wording on the subject emphasizes the importance of slavery and helps protect it. I feel like the only way to abolish slavery is to get rid of the old Constitution and draft a new one. This new constitution must champion freedom and equality, as well as the total and immediate emancipation of all US slaves.

I’m Frederick Douglass, and I think that the Constitution does not support the brutal and harmful practice of slavery. I disagree with those who condemn and criticize the Constitution as a proslavery document. In my opinion, these people have purposely misunderstood the Constitution’s true meaning. When accurately understood, the Constitution can play an important role in the abolitionist movement; we can use it as a tool against those who support slavery. It can also help us attain emancipation for all US slaves.
