The progressive era (1901-1917) most definitively possessed the progressive movement; a movement that took place at the turn of the 20th century and was directly caused by industrialization and urbanization (the growth of factories and cities). The movement sought to improve the lives of those in this Industrial Age through improved democracy that would benefit the people and strengthen justice. Some issues that came to light in this era were the corruption in businesses and government as investigated by the muckrakers, child labor, horrible living conditions in the slums and heavily industrialized, areas, and corrupted government held by lobbyists. Some solutions that emerged was the socialist party of America that protected the working class, the meat inspection act of 1906 that ensured clean meats, the Elkins act of 1903 that stopped railroads from granting rebates to favored customers, and Theodore Roosevelt’s Square deal that represented his desire to treat both corporations and workers fairly in a dispute.
