Why did the United States support the mujahedeen in Afghanistan during the 1980s

The United States supported Mujahedeen in Afghanistan because they were resisting the Soviet invasion of their country, and also supported the Mujahedeen against the Soviet backed Communist regime in Afghanistan and the Soviet army that was supporting it. The United States even supplied equipment, supplies and weaponry and when the soviet withdrew from Afghanistan.

(The Mujahedeen are group of nationalists who fight for their freedom. )
